ANIMAL POPULATION ECOLOGIST
EDINBURGH
The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences.
We are looking for an Animal Population Ecologist to work in a dynamic research group at CEH Edinburgh. You will be working mainly on a long-term, individual-based population study of seabird species on the Isle of May. You will work on the impacts of climate and other drivers on seabird demography and trophic interactions in the North Sea, playing a leading role in the analysis of long-term data and publishing results in high impact ecological journals.
You will be required to manage large data sets and contribute to the collection of long-term data. Initially, you will work on a project investigating the impact of drivers of phenology in different ecosystems (coastal marine, freshwater and terrestrial). You will also be expected to develop your own research both with staff at CEH and in other organisations. Your research should have relevance to climate change and the conservation of biodiversity. Outputs will therefore not only include high quality science publications but also reports for relevant stakeholders.
You will be an experienced scientist with demonstrable skills in analysing demographic data and familiarity with population modelling. You will have a good publication record, strong statistical skills and income generating potential. You should have a PhD or equivalent or a comparable level of experience in a relevant subject.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the ability to work within a small team but also have the flexibility to work within larger groups. Alongside this will be the ability to work under minimal supervision and have problem solving skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Access or similar is also required.
The salary for this post is in the range £22,220 progressing to £27,440 per annum dependent on skills and experience. In addition NERC offer a pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave and 10½ days’ public and privilege holiday per annum.
Closing date for receipt of applications is 23rd November 2007.PostDoc & Bourses
