1 postdoctoral and 2 PhD positions
One postdoctoral (80%) and one PhD position in community ecology
The importance of dispersal and spatial processes on community structure has recently
received a burst of interest, mostly from a theoretical point of view. Regional and local-scale
effects on community structure are embodied in the concept of metacommunity. A research
project on this issue has been initiated in ecological compensation areas that are interspersed
in agricultural landscapes. Main focuses are on the structure and functioning of food-webs.
Empirical, experimental and modelling approaches will be used. One 2y postdoctoral (80%)
and one 3y PhD position are currently open in this project. The ideal candidates are very
motivated students/researchers in ecology with skills in both field work and data analysis.
The candidate must be familiar with animal or plant ecological research; previous experience
with insects, birds and/or mammals, as well as monitoring techniques would be
advantageous. She/he should have a deep interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
One PhD position in ecological modelling
Functional responses describe the dynamics of trophic interactions between predators and
prey. There is a large body of theoretical researches on this issue. Experimental studies
yielded results that are not accounted for by existing theories. The aim of the project is to
develop new models of functional responses, with an emphasis on stochastic models rather
than conventional differential equations. Phenomenological models of well understood
systems will be develop and more general models useful in a food web context will be
developed. Microcosm facilities will be available, and the candidate will have the opportunity
to design experiments that will be carried out by bachelor or master students. This position is
funded by the NCCR Plant survival (http://www2.unine.ch/nccr) for 3y. The ideal candidate is
a very motivated graduate student in ecology, with strong skills in mathematics. She/he
should have a deep interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
The scientific working language is English of which good spoken and written ability is
required. Knowledge of spoken French or German would be advantageous to live in Fribourg,
a bilingual town, but is not mandatory.
Applications, including a letter of motivation, CV with photo and two reference persons
should be sent to the address below until 7 December 2005, preferably by email as attached
pdf files. Positions start from January 2006 on. (More informations can be found on
