Volunteer Research Position

Where: Echo Bay, Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia

What: Project involves research on sea louse-wild salmon interactions,
the effect of sea lice on salinity preferences in juvenile salmonids and
the influence of sea louse altered salinity preferences on juvenile
salmonid ecology.
When: mid March to end of June 2006 (exact dates to be determined).
Applicants should:
be biology/zoology graduates or in the last two years of
 undergraduate studies
have the ability to live and work in a remote area for extended
 periods of time
have the ability to work long hours in potentially adverse weather
 conditions
be comfortable working on the water
work well with others and have a good sense of humour!
Desirable, though not mandatory, experience:
small boat handling
juvenile salmonid sampling, identification
marine field work
first aid training
Expected duties (all of which can be taught during field season):
juvenile salmon collection and identification
louse identification
implementation of behavioural assays
This is an excellent opportunity for a recently graduated or upper level
biology student to gain practical marine field experience working with
salmonids and the opportunity to work on a topical issue in salmonid
ecology and conservation. You will also have the opportunity to interact
with a number of interesting people and get to know a beautiful part of
B.C.'s coast. This is a volunteer position however room, board and
transportation to and from Vancouver will be provided.
