Call for Applications: Research Fellowship

A call for applications is opened for a Research Fellowship in the project PTDC/AMB/73901/2006, with the title ?ABAFOBIO ? Farmland Abandonment, Fire and Biodiversity? and supported by Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e a Tecnologia, with the following conditions:
1. Duration and working conditions: Duration of 12 months, starting in October 2009 (later dates can be negotiated), in a regime of exclusivity, as stated in the regulations for advanced training of Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e a Tecnologia (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/normasbolsasemprojectos) and the regulations of the Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. The grant may be renewable up to a total of 18 months.
2. Scientific area: Ecology
3. Research objectives: The successful applicant will join an on-going project, which aims at understanding the consequences of farmland abandonment and fire regime for biodiversity and ecosystem services. One of the project goals is the development of models explaining the dynamics of vegetation after farmland abandonment, and the effects of fire regime on forest expansion. The successful applicant will be working on GIS analysis of datasets and on modeling. The successful applicant will be encouraged to enroll in the Biology PhD program at the Faculty of the Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

5. Requested academic education: Candidates should have a Master or Bachelor/Licenciatura degree in ecology, biology, environmental sciences or a related field. Experience with Geographic Information Systems or Ecological Modelling is a plus.

8. Stipend: According to the values of FCT research felowships (980 ? /month for candidates holding a Master degree and 750 ?/month for candidates holding a Licenciatura/Bachelor degree).
