English essential
Education
- Graduation at the doctorate level from a recognized university in areas related to ecology, wildlife biology, population biology or zoology.
Experience
Experience in the conception, planning and conduct of original quantitative research on wildlife population ecology, population dynamics, population viability analysis or related fields.
Experience developing and writing high quality papers, including some as principal author, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals on subjects related to ecology, population biology, conservation ecology and similar fields.
Experience developing and applying of state-of-the-art statistical, mathematical, and computing methods for modelling and simulating population dynamics, and for estimating population parameters.
Working effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research teams to address complex environmental or ecological research problems.

- Occasional travel by air and land is required including travel to remote locations on e.g., small aircraft.
- Willing and able to handle live and dead wildlife specimens, and(or) work with selected infectious organisms and toxic chemicals.

Challenge
New knowledge and methodologies on population analysis, population modeling, evaluation of population viability, evaluation of causes of population change (both anthropogenic and natural) and of population management options, in support of the Environment Canada's mandate to conserve and protect species at risk, migratory birds, and other wildlife populations and their habitats.
Emphasis will be on providing science support required in the implementation of Wildlife Disease Strategy and Species at Risk legislation, especially with respect to recovery feasibility, survival or recovery goals, population and distribution objectives, and the identification of critical habitat.
Scientific information, advice, leadership, and recommendations to scientists and resource managers in Environment Canada and other federal regulatory agencies, their provincial and territorial counterparts, First Nations, international organizations, universities, private and non government organizations, and the general public in the areas of wildlife population dynamics and the conservation of wildlife species, particularly species at risk.
